

Business Class Offerings for 2007-2008
Sequence – Students should take either Basic Computing (BCA1) or Marketing Entrepreneurship (BMM1A) in order to take Virtual Enterprise (BVE1A) class. See requirements section for each course.
Course: Entrepreneurship (BMA)Description: A business course which provides essential foundation for marketing products or businesses and then proceeds towards how to own and operate your business as an entrepreneur. Course is a must for those preparing for a career in retailing, sales, marketing or looking to start their own business. First-half of course covers the skills and knowledge related to a variety of business disciplines including Marketing, Advertising, Management, International Business and Economics. The second half enables students to apply what they have learned in the first half towards preparing a business plan and owning and operating their own business. Course includes group exercises, real world case studies, field trips to businesses and guest speakers from all types of businesses. Requirements: Candidates interested in the Virtual Enterprise MUST take this class. No prerequisites for class. Course: Business Computer Applications (BCA)Description: Students will be taught basic typing skills with emphasis on developing proper habits resulting in improved speed and accuracy. Skills are cumulative and lead to timing drills that assess student’s ability to type with speed and accuracy. Class then progresses into Word Processing where students lean basic Microsoft Word skills that enable them to produce effective business letters, flyers and documents used in various “real world settings”. Course is great preparation for skills needed for entry level jobs out of school and or the many other courses that use Word. Students will be taught basic PowerPoint and advanced Microsoft Word skills that will enable them to produce outstanding presentations and documents. Course is great preparation for presentation skills needed for entry level jobs out of school or for courses that require printed presentations. In PowerPoint, students will learn to create business and creative presentations, slideshows, add color and special effects and will learn to insert pictures, charts and graphs into their PowerPoint presentations. In advanced Word, students will build on skills they gained in Word Processing I and learn how to do a mail merge, create a resume, work with multiple-page documents and integrate Word with other Microsoft applications and the internet. Requirements: It is recommended that candidates interested in the Virtual Enterprise take this class. Prerequisite: None
Course: Virtual Enterprise (BVE1)Description: This 4 credit high school course offers students 2 business credits and 1 credit in Economics and one credit in Government. Requirements: Students should have completed either the Marketing/Entrepreneur class (BMM1A) or Basic Computing class (BCA1). Students in excellent academic standing do not have any prerequisites at this time. Should be at least a Junior. The Virtual Enterprises (VE) course is a simulated business that is set up and run by students with the guidance of a teacher/facilitator. The course allows students to experience, in a simulated business environment, all facets of being an employee in a firm. The Virtual Enterprise involves students in every aspect of a business, including human resources, accounting, product development, production, distribution, marketing and sales. This workplace simulation enables students to understand how employees, workgroup teams, and departments interact with each other and work together for the goal of the company. With communication links to nearly 3,000 firms around the world, the VE exposes students to different cultures, business practices and currencies and gives students a broader international perspective. Students engage in hands-on applications, problem solving and written and verbal communication. They are responsible for producing a business plan for their simulated business. In its first year 2005-2006, Bryant High School students won the Queens Business Plan competition. Bryant also won the Queens competition for 2006-2007. Students also get to sell their virtual products at trade fairs. Students have opportunities to register for free college courses and seminars related to a variety of business skills including Web design, Budgeting and Payroll.
Course: College Accounting (BFAU)Description: This four-credit college course is a full-year business course offered and taught at Bryant during the regular school day. The course is offered through cooperation with PACE University. Students who pay the $100 fee (total for all four credits) and pass the class can apply these four-credits towards any college. Students must be seniors to receive the college credits. All students that pass will receive high school credits. The course provides an introduction to the purpose and nature of accounting, accounting principles, financial statements and their analysis, the accounting cycle, measurement of income (profit and loss), internal controls and ethics, forms of business organization, taxes, and stocks and bonds. Great opportunity to learn about “real world” businesses and the accounting methods used to track their progress. Guest speakers include people from the accounting profession and College Accounting Professors offering career advice and direction. Requirements: There are no prerequisites for this class (do not have to take basic Accounting course) but students should be seniors with excellent academic standing. Course: Accounting (BFA)Description: A business course that enables students to gain basic accounting skills. These skills will provide students with an understanding of the purpose of accounting also referred to as the language of business. The course covers all the activities that are included in the accounting cycle for all types of businesses including analyzing and recording business transactions and preparing financial documents. Students will also learn to help themselves with budgeting, check writing and investing their money. Real-world examples and visitors from field can be expected. Excellent preparation for entry level Bookkeeping/Accounting position or preparation for college level Accounting course. Students also learn how to use basic Excel spreadsheets to complete Accounting applications. Potential one-week accounting internships at PACE University or Long Island University available for juniors at the end of the school term (last week in June, first week in July).
Course: MOUSE SQUAD / COMPUTER TECH (BCTEC) Description: Basic (level 1) training in effective troubleshooting and resolution of the most common technical problems encountered in schools. Strong emphasis on the use of troubleshooting methodology and use of alternative resources, including the internet, to resolve problems. More advanced technical training in the second term including participation in hands-on MOUSE technical and troubleshooting courses, as well as performing service calls as requested throughout the building. Introduction to Help Desk Operations, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Students will also gain experience with Customer Service and Customer Relations and employment opportunities in the field. |
