ART  COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

 

 

Emerging Artists Major Art Studio (AMAS): This course is taken in succession after Required Art by students who are recommended by the art teachers for the Emerging Artists program. In this course, students further explore the foundations of art by experiencing new media and attempting more complex art projects. Students are expected to become more self-motivated in terms of their homework assignments, and also complete a research project presentation in this course.

Pre-requisites: Teacher permission

 

Emerging Artists Ceramics (AMAC):  This course is second in the Emerging Artists Sequence. In this course, students explore the medium of clay, and the tools, glazes, processes and machines involved in creating ceramics. They are exposed to famous artists as well as indigenous art. The students focus on creating three dimensional forms, some functional objects, some sculpture. The students take field trips to see indigenous artifacts. They complete a research project based on an artist, and create a sculpture influenced by that artist’s work.  Later in the year, students explore a variety of drawing techniques including: pencil, charcoal, conte crayon, pen and ink, and some painting media as well. They are exposed to famous artists and art movements. The students complete homework assignments and focus on honing their drafting skills. They also create large-scale collaborative work and experiment with alternative media.

Pre-requisites: AMS and teacher permission.

 

 

Emerging Artists Portfolio (AMAP):  This course is the culminating experience for students in who have completed all other courses in the Emerging Artists sequence (they may be cross-registered with another class in their senior year to complete the sequence in time for graduation.) In this course, students complete a portfolio which includes 5 pieces based on a theme that they determine themselves. The students also complete a self-evaluating essay reflecting on their portfolio pieces. The students also complete homework assignments and keep a sketchbook. In the second half of the course, students begin to review for the Art Regents by taking practice tests, doing timed drawings, and reviewing art history. Students take the Art Regents and may be preparing portfolios for applications to colleges.

Required Art (A1R) : This course is the prerequisite to all emerging artist classes.  In this class, students learn the basics of art: the elements and principles of design, while exploring a variety of media. They are introduced to various artists, art movements, and indigenous art. The students create their own art as well as learn about art in a traditional academic manner. Students complete a series of homework assignments to reinforce their class experiences. This is not an annualized course. From this class students may be recruited for Emerging Artists or other art electives.

1. REQUIRED ART (unless waived by instructor or A.P.)

2. EMERGING ARTISTS MAJOR ART STUDIO   (2 CREDITS)

3. EMERGING ARTISTS CERAMICS  (2 CREDITS)

4. EMERGING ARTISTS PORTFOLIO  (2 CREDITS)

 

Total: 8 credits (6 credits if Required Art is waived.)
